“Flowering Anger”

This piece represents women immersed in the worlds of political conflict produced by the dominance of the male animus. The first two women are witnesses to the inhumanity of war. Their photo was derived from the front page of a local newspaper during the Vietnam war. Their profound grief was caused by the death of innocent children, an indelible image of a man-made disaster. The last two panels represent a variety of women from various time and countries who were actively engaged in political struggle. Agnes Smedley, Maud Gonne and La Passionata are present among the poignant figures painted by Goya and Picasso.

“Gracias a la Vida”

This is a memorial for my friend Sara Barber who died last year. Sara lives in my memory in many manifestations – friend, teacher, reader and activist in the gay community both in New York and later in Santa Fe, NM. She had an appetite for life that even the attrition of a rare brain disease did not quell. Her generosity of spirit and sense of humor remained part of her to the end. I think that we all wonder how we might cope in the face of encountering such a death. Sara continued to live the full life and inspired us all.

“See No Evil”

This piece was inspired by listening to a radio account of “Kristall Nacht.” This historical event, although it was not the first horrific act of the Nazis against the Jewish population, was an outrageous precursor of inhumanity and the genocide to come. I was so moved by this drama that I created this piece in protest to every awful aspect of the dark side of humans and the horrible consequences thus visited upon every aspect of life.
