The intentions behind this project are to expose audience members to the myriad of ways Black\, queer people navigate their personal lives and mental health while experiencing oppression and fighting injustices afflicting both the Black and Queer communities. Set in the present day culture of fighting against state violence\, Seeds tells the story of D\, a Black\, queer masculine-of-center woman who is pulled into activism after seeing her best friend murdered by police. Although she experiences the turmoil of fighting for justice while battling oppression because of her identity\, the seeds she plants for Black liberation grow stronger because of her perseverance. DESCRIPTION:Larkin Street Youth Services & Qcc present\nChanges\nJune 9 – Opening Reception – 6pm\nExhibition June 9 – July 2\nLARKIN\, Opening Reception – 6pm\n134 Golden Gate avenue\, SF\nCurated by Alex Hernandez \nFREE \nDue to San Francisco’s rising cost of living\, it has created a lot displacement for various groups that once thrived in the city. Based on San Francisco’s 2013 Homeless Count\, 29 percent of the city’s homeless population identified as LGBT. A portion of those homeless are Queer youth that have run away from home from other parts of country\, coming to San Francisco in hopes of finding a community that will love and support them. Due to the economic changes to the city\, a lot of these young folks struggle to obtain housing and jobs. \nLarkin Street Youth Services has been helping youth get off the streets since the 1980’s. The Art department at Larkin has been encouraging artistic inclined youth to use art as a way to express their struggles and aspirations. This exhibition perfectly fits the NQAF theme of Horizons because it gives young Queer artists a voice and perspective of San Francisco’s changing landscape. DESCRIPTION:Aggregate Space Gallery & Qcc present\nAll Ways Lead to the Mill\nJune 3 – June 18\nAggregate Space Gallery\nhttp://aggregatespacegallery.org\nOpening Reception: June 3\, 6-10pm.\nArtist Talk: June 11\, 1pm.\nJamil Hellu \nFREE \nAll Ways Lead to the Mill is a solo exhibition by visual artist Jamil Hellu\, investigating the conflicts that emerge at the intersection of Middle-Eastern heritage and queerness. Exploring how we determine relationships to cultural histories and personal narratives\, Hellu claims his identity in relation to his Syrian roots and Arab ethnicity. All Ways Lead To The Mill is inspired by a Syrian proverb about how different paths lead to the same destination. The show brings with it the specter of struggle that youth maneuver to (re)claim space and carve out the complexities of their identities. \nAlongside powerful depictions of self determination\, this exhibit transcends the two dimensional\, offering a unique glimpse into the less-often-heard-seen-thought-touched-interiority of vulnerability that comes with uncovering (un)truths of gender and sexuality. By centering voices of queer youth\, we are able to reflect upon work that has been done in queer communities as well as build intergenerational conversations for envisioning supportive and liberating futures. From the Sins Invalid Statement Against Police Violence: “Disabled people who are Autistic\, who are Deaf\, who live with mental health impairments or cognitive impairments\, epilepsy or movement disorders\, are at highest risk of being assaulted by police\, and that is deeply compounded when we are further marginalized by homelessness\, transphobia\, and white supremacy.” \nThis screening makes accessible the work of artists and activists including Janetta Johnson\, Noémie Serfaty\, Akiko Sampson\, Kin Folkz\, Lisa Ganser\, Judy Hanks with Nazeem and Spencer Joles\, Tali Jones\, Colin Ashante\, Leroy Moore & Emmitt Thrower\, and Mario Farid.
