Gentrification is affecting people’s sense of place and belonging and pulls away cultures of rootedness. \nRoots in Resilience Film Festival showcases how people from communities of color in San Francisco claim agency to the places they call home. The festival displays the work of artists\, youth\, residents and community members who explore intergenerational blessings in their communities. In order to understand blessings\, they fearlessly attempt to also recognize struggle. An Evening of Butch Burlesque\nQULTURE\, 8pm\nJulia Robertson\, Oriana Saportas \nExhibition Free and events suggested donation $5-$10 \nWhat does it mean to live in the slash of a binary; male/female\, gay/straight? FLEXIBLE HORIZONS; the body in transit is a curated group show that defines the end of “normal.” This exhibit explores the intersection of class\, race and gender within the body-individual-community—through portraits\, performance\, experimental films and discussion. \nJune 3 – Film Screening Criminal Queers Directed by Eric A. Stanley and Chris Vargas $5 suggested donation; proceeds go to TGI Justice Project. \nCriminal Queers visualizes a radical trans/queer struggle against the prison industrial complex and toward a world without walls. Remembering that prison breaks are both theoretical and material practices of freedom\, this film imagines what spaces might be opened up if crowbars\, wigs and metal files become tools for transformation. \nEric A. Stanley is a filmmaker\, writer and coeditor of Captive Genders: Trans Embodiment and the Prison Industrial Complex. Join them as they present their film and discuss their process. \nARTISTS’ BIOGRAPHIES \nCeleste Chan is a queer artist\, activist\, writer\, and filmmaker\, schooled by DIY and immigrant parents from Malaysia and the Bronx\, NY. Her films feature oral history interviews\, cellophane\, blow-up unicorns\, a pearl-clutching fashion fetishist\, lipstick as armor\, images of disintegration\, and direct animation. Her recent writing can be found in AWAY\, cream city review’s genrequeer folio\, and the Glitter & Grit Anthology. \nIrina Contreras is an interdisciplinary artist and writer\, whose individual and collaborative projects examine personal reflections of collective experiences. Her writing has appeared in the anthology Beyond Walls and Cages\, which just received the Association of Borderlands President Gold Award for 2014. From the Sins Invalid Statement Against Police Violence: “Disabled people who are Autistic\, who are Deaf\, who live with mental health impairments or cognitive impairments\, epilepsy or movement disorders\, are at highest risk of being assaulted by police\, and that is deeply compounded when we are further marginalized by homelessness\, transphobia\, and white supremacy.” \nThis screening makes accessible the work of artists and activists including Janetta Johnson\, Noémie Serfaty\, Akiko Sampson\, Kin Folkz\, Lisa Ganser\, Judy Hanks with Nazeem and Spencer Joles\, Tali Jones\, Colin Ashante\, Leroy Moore & Emmitt Thrower\, and Mario Farid.
