AXIS Dance Company presents the long-awaited premiere of The Ground, the Air, and Places in Between, new repertory works of dance legend Bill T. Jones, and local luminaries Joe Goode, Sonya Delwaide, and Johanna Haigood. Co-sponsored by the Queer Cultural Center and Harvey Milk Institute, SF Bay Guardian, and Clif Bar.
AXIS Dance Company has gained national and international recognition for their artistic innovation with disabled and non-disabled dancers and choreographers. Dedicated to developing original contemporary choreography of the highest caliber, AXIS Dance Company is comprised of dancers with and without disabilities and has played a pivotal role in pioneering the new dance form known as “integrated dance.” Heralded as having an “expansive vision” (Boston Globe) AXIS boasts a “filmic…fluidity of motion ….uniquely their own” (Daily Californian) that is a “visual and physical discovery” (East Bay Express). The Ground, the Air, and Places in Between is a triumph that brings out the very best in AXIS.
These works have been commissioned with support from Dance Umbrella (Boston MA), National Endowment for the Arts, Alameda County Arts Commission, Fleishhacker Foundation, Walter and Elise Haas Fund, LEF Foundation, Zellerbach Family Fund, AT&T Foundation, and the City of Oakland Cultural Arts Division. The Ground, the Air, and Places in Between is the Company’s 2000 home season concert..
