Jack Halberstam: Unbuilding Gender: Trans* Anarchitectures In and Beyond the Work of Gordon Matta-Clark

In this talk, Jack Halberstam looks towards anarchitectural practices of unmaking as promulgated by the American artist Gordon Matta-Clark (1943–1978) and links the ideas of unbuilding and creative destruction that characterize his work to develop a queer concept of anarchitecture focused upon the trans* body .

This year’s theme—#Resist—for the National Queer Arts Festival seems a natural progression. With the systematic cruelty, hate speech and “fake facts” that are besieging all of our communities, it was time to both withstand and take action: the very definitions of Resist.
