Celebrating the release of the brand-new anthology, BLACK LIKE US (Cleis Press, 2002), coeditors Don Weise and Devon Carbado invite some of the book’s contributors for readings and a discussion on the contributions of LGBTQ African-American writers throughout the past century. Red Jordan Arobateau, Marci Blackman, Michelle Cliff and Evelyn C. White are among this evening’s panelists.

Red Jordan Arobateau is the author and publisher of more than forty works, including Lucy and Mickey, Ho Stroll, and The Black Biker.

Marci Blackman, a founding member of Sister Spit’s Ramblin’ Road Show, is the award-winning author of the novel Po Man’s Child. Her short stories appear in the erotica collections Fetish and Brown Sugar.

Michelle Cliff is a Jamaican-American writer. She is the author of the novels Abeng, No Telephone to Heaven, and Free Enterprise and the short story collection Bodies of Water and The Store of a Million Items.

Darieck Scott is the author of Traitor to the Race. His short stories also appear in Flesh and the Word and Callaloo.

Evelyn C. White is editor of The Black Women’s Health Book. Her official biography of Alice Walker is forthcoming from W.W. Norton.

Moderators:
Devon Carbado is coeditor of Black Like Us: A Century of Lesbian, Gay, and Bisexual African American Fiction. He is Professor of Law and African American Studies at UCLA, and edited the book Black Men on Race, Gender, and Sexuality: A Critical Reader.

Donald Weise coedited Black Like Us, as well as The Huey P. Newton Reader, a new collection of writings by the Black Panther Party founder. He is sales manager of Cleis Press and editor of Gore Vidal’s book of essays Gore Vidal: Sexually Speaking—Collected Sex Writings.
