At every stage of an artist’s career, the first request from a curator, producer, or event coordinator is: “Please send me a short bio, and your artist statement.” Artists who attend this workshop will leave with a fine tuned narrative biography, an artist’s statement, and an opportunity to meet other artists who are developing their artistic practice.
Who should attend this workshop:
Emerging Artists who want to develop the skill set it takes to be a professional artists in a competitive art environment.
Seasoned Artists who want to refine their skills by working through the creative writing process with a seasoned professional.
What you will learn in the workshop.
- The workshop instructor will begin with examples of well-written biographies and artists’ statements and break down the key components of effective writing.
- The workshop facilitator will guide the attendees through a creative process of writing an effective short biography and artist’s statement.
- Through one-on-one support from the instructor and group feedback, artists will refine and edit their writing.
- Attendees will leave the workshop with a polished short narrative biography and artist’s statement.
- If time permits the attendees will be given the opportunity to present themselves to the group in a short “elevator pitch” about who they are and what their art practice is all about – ready for real world encounters with the art world.

Janet Silk is an artist and writer who teaches professional writing and fine art seminar courses in the Department of Art and Art History at San Jose State University. Janet has co-authored articles about her collaborative work that have been published in Afterimage, Public Culture and Leonardo. Her collaborative artwork has been discussed in Snap To Grid: A User’s Guide to Digital Arts, Media, and Cultures; Women, Art and Technology; and Information Arts: Intersections of Art, Science and Technology. She has written several essays about her own work and teaching experience, as well as about diverse topics such as Black Metal music, Czech poetry, and Art/Life boundaries.
