Creating Queer Community New Artist Meetings & Returning Artists Application, 2019
ABOUT CREATING QUEER COMMUNITY
CQC (Creating Queer Community) is an annual grants program to commission LGBTQ+ artists and arts organizations to create works for the National Queer Arts Festival and for visual arts, performance, and multi-disciplinary programs in partnership with QCC.
2020 THEME
For the theme of the 2020 National Queer Arts Festival, we ask artists to address Transformation in all its forms.
Maya Angelou wrote, “We delight in the beauty of the butterfly, but rarely admit the changes it has gone through to achieve that beauty.”
What does it mean to transform? How do our Queer lives evolve and open the way to the transformation our experiences conjure? Why is transformation necessary and how do we as a Queer community embrace the transition?
What unexpected growth do our hearts open to when we surrender to a vision of change, love, affirmation and forgiveness?
We request art that offers visibility to transformational queer stories of courage, inspiration, love, perseverance, hope, disappointment, creativity, expansion, difference and success.

CQC HISTORY
QCC began operating Creating Queer Community (CQC) in 2000 by awarding 5 small commissions ranging from $500 to $1500. Since then, QCC has commissioned approximately 120 LGBTQ+ artists to create new works that authentically express our community’s diverse experiences. The vast majority of these commissions have been awarded to culturally-specific and gender-specific individual artists whose work expresses the experiences of Queers of color, Lesbians and Trans people.
CQC commissions artists in developing works for our National Queer Arts Festival, one of the largest Queer Arts Festivals in the country. To date, these Festivals have presented more than 800 different events featuring over 1000 Queer artists including Bill T. Jones, Alice Walker, Robert Rauschenberg, Meredith Monk, Adrienne Rich, Marga Gomez, Justin Chin, Thom Gunn, Cherrie Moraga and Dorothy Allison. From May to July audiences can experience interdisciplinary shows from powerful visual arts exhibitions, dynamic dance performances, to multi-media showcases and more.
