“Queer Moves” is the final program of the SF Queer Arts Festival Pride Celebration, presenting some of the Bay Area’s hottest and most thought provoking lesbian and gay artists in a wide range of choreography. Work is presented from ballet to jazz and funk with a special emphasis on work that speaks directly to the lives and lifestyles of the gay community. Anne Bluethenthal and Krissy Keefer, artistic directors of the Annual Lesbian and Gay Dance Festival are creating the program for the Queer Arts Festival. Many of the artists performing have participated in the Annual Lesbian and Gay Dance Festival breaking new ground for visibility for lesbian and gay artists in the Bay Area arts community. The choreographers pictured here will be featured in the Queer Moves Program.

Enrico Labayen

Enrico Labayen has studied at the American Ballet Theatre School, School of American Ballet, American Ballet Center, and American Dance Center and has performed with American Ballet Theatre, Alvin Ailey, Harford Ballet, Garden State Ballet, Eglevsky Ballet, SF Dance Spectrum, Zaccho Dance Theatre, and LINES Contemporary Ballet. He was a featured guest artist with the SF Opera, Ballet Philippines, Berkeley Ballet Theatre, and the Netherlands Dance Theatre. Choreographer Labayen founded and directed The LAB, Projekt Group-USA, now renamed Labayen Dance/SF.

Kevin Ware

Kevin Ware is originally from Cleveland, Ohio and holds a BA in Psychology from Northwestern University. While in Chicago, he danced with the Joseph Holmes Chicago Dance Theater. In addition to his work with ODC/San Francisco, Kevin has been choreographing his own work under the aegis of the Kevin Ware Choreography Project. He has presented works commissioned by the Afro Solo Festival, the Gay and Lesbian Dance Festival, Pacific Dance Theater’s Festival Series and Summerfest. Kevin has been nominated for an “Izzie” for his work with ODC, and a Cable Car Award for his choreography. He joined ODC in the spring of 1991.

Anne Bluethenthal

Anne Bluethenthal is founder and Artistic Director of Anne Bluethenthal and Dancers. Winner of the SF Bay Guardian’s 1996 Goldie Award for Dance, she has been choreographing and performing in the Bay Area since she arrived in 1982. She has been an artistic consultant and director for many Bay Area choreographers and travels as a solo artist and teacher. She created and directed the full length dances Fish Can Sing (’90), Connections (’92), and Excavations of the Spirit (’94).

The Turnbuckles

The Turnbuckles Alessandra Ogren of (Wise Fool Puppet Intervention), and Miranda Mellis with Shannon McGuire (Knee Jerk Dance Project, CONTRABAND) are performing trapeze and dance with music by Carolyne, Stormy, Alicia McCarthy, and Caroline (Alien Rowboat is the name of the Turnbuckless’ band). The Turnbuckles have performed in New York, Portland, the Michigan Womyn’s Music Festival and all over the Bay Area.

Mercy Sidbury

Mercy Sidbury moved to SF to dance with the Oberlin Dance Collective (now ODC/SF) in 1976. Since that time, she has lived both in SF and in New York City, dancing in the Margaret Jenkins Dance Company, Joe Goode Performance Group, and working on her own choreography. Her solo and group work has also been seen throughout the US, Europe, Canada, and the Michigan Womyn’s Music Festival.
