February 1 – March 15, 2014
3rd Floor, Community Space
San Francisco LGBT Community Center
1800 Market Street
San Francisco, CA 94102
Free and Open to the Public
Alternative Futures, an exhibition of visionary architectural designs inspired by the new LGBT senior housing project at 55 Laguna, will be on display on the third floor of the San Francisco LGBT Community Center February 1 – March 15, 2014, with a reception free and open to the public on Saturday, February 8th from 1 – 3 pm.
Come see the visionary designs for LGBT senior housing by Masters students in CCA’s Architecture program. Using 55 Laguna, an LGBT senior housing project currently being developed in San Francisco as inspiration, the students were challenged to think about the specific history and needs of the LGBT senior community and how that might inspire new strategies for multi-unit housing in the city. Student designs will be on display at the San Francisco LGBT Community Center through March 15th. The public is invited to a free reception on March 8th, from 1 to 3pm.
About 55 Laguna
In August 2012, the San Francisco Planning Commission unanimously approved the Openhouse plan to build LGBT-welcoming senior housing at 55 Laguna St. Openhouse has partnered with veteran housing developer, Mercy Housing California, to build, own and operate 110 apartments for seniors in need of affordable housing. In what promises to be another proud landmark in the history of LGBT people in San Francisco and the nation, the project also includes a community center and Openhouse service offices for residents and LGBT seniors from across the city.

The Alternative Futures exhibition is being curated by Neal Schwartz AIA, Associate Professor at California College of the Arts as part of the ongoing Queer Conversations on Culture and the Arts (QCCA) program – a collaborative effort between QCC and CCA aimed at uplifting the profile of the queer arts movement by bringing together locally and nationally renowned queer artists, writers, filmmakers and scholars to discuss a broad range of LGBT topics in humanities and the arts.
The exhibition reception will be held on Saturday, February 8th from 1 – 3 pm and will be an opportunity for public to interact with exhibition curators and contributors as well as individuals leading the 55 Laguna project.
