HOPE AND HEALING IN TIMES OF WAR
SomArts Gallery
June 2006
“I have learned two lessons in my life: first, there are no sufficient literary, psychological, or historical answers to human tragedy, only moral ones. Second, just as despair can come to one only from other human beings, hope, too, can be given to one.”
Elie Wiesel accepting his Nobel Peace Prize
Queer Cultural Center (Qcc) and the Asian Pacific Islander Cultural Center (APICC) co-host a major exhibition that asks: how do artists, as individuals and as members of communities, spread hope among the population during times of increasing violence, political conflict and war? We believe that artists are capable of bringing about positive social change by creating work that addresses inequities, leads to the healing of injustice and inspires hope and a belief in a better future.
Qcc & APICC have collaborated with over 20 arts organizations to curate this exhibition.
Co-Curator’s Statement
While many Americans feel powerless and cynical about our nation’s direction and choices, Asian Pacific Islander Cultural Center (APICC) and Queer Cultural Center (Qcc) believed it was time for artists to express their views. Hope and Healing in Times of War addresses the urgent question: How do artists, as individuals and as members of diverse communities, inspire hope among the population during times of increasing violence, conflict and war? This collaborative visual art exhibition brings together 40 of the Bay Area’s outstanding artists who believe that artists are capable of bringing about positive social change by creating work that leads to healing and inspires hope.
We hope these events will connect audiences with the deep feelings expressed by this diverse company of artists about wars they are engaged in – poverty, racism, citizenship status, ageism, disease, disasters, the environment, politics, colonization and gender issues – and build bridges across the divides that inspire us to actively participate in creating a more equitable and peaceful society.
