Weighted Acceptance is a collaboration of dance, music and poetic storytelling that explores the inter-sectional oppressions faced by People Of Color. This multidisciplinary performance piece seeks to heal urban communities by deepening the understanding of weights People Of Color collectively share and carry. Weighted Acceptance will focus on societal persecution and provide positive avenues to identify and dismantle prejudicial ideas regarding colorism. Weighted Acceptance is a platform that breaks through social and racial injustices. Weighted Acceptance is a safe space for all to grow and heal through movement and spoken word.

Bahiya Movement (BM), founded by Afia and Nafi Thompson. BM’s mission-to create a safe welcoming environment where all shapes, sizes, and genders transform into performing artists. BM’s vision is to break barriers regarding body image/self-esteem through the art of dance. www.bahiyamovement.com

Afia Thompson-Director
Afia “Beautiful One” Thompson-founder of Bahiya Movement, has performed nationally and internationally. Trained in West African, jazz, hip-hop and modern dance. She continues to teach and direct in the Oakland community to professional dancers and dance enthusiast of all ages.

Nafi Thompson

Nafi Thompson-Artistic Director
Nafi Thompson, Artistic Director of Bahiya Movement produced/presented at Art and Soul festival, Palace of Fine Arts, and Black Choreographers. She’s choreographed for several youth companies such as Mini Mix’d youth dance company. Her heart dances and makes beautiful movement.

Shawn Hawkins Principal Dancer
Shawn Hawkins, San Francisco native. He discovered his passion for dance at California State University, East Bay. He crafted his unique choreographic skills by fusing hip-hop and modern dance styles while creating powerful pieces dealing with social and political issues.

Dominique Turner Guest Dancer
Dominique Turner, from southern California, holds a degree in African Studies. Dancing for 16 years, and trained in jazz, tap, ballet, and contemporary dance. She is extremely passionate about the arts and advocates for mental health, and cultural representation.

SevanKelee Lucky 7 Boult a performance artist. Writing since childhood, her most recent artistic venture involves the ukulele and spoken word.  She effortlessly blends music and poetry to engage the audience with her soft, raspy voice and mesmerizing stage presence.
