Join us for a discussion about slippery categories with scholars/artists E.G. Crichton and Kim Anno. Kim Anno and E.G. Crichton have created an ongoing community art project called “Lost and Found: A Museum of Lesbian Memory.” For this event, they will pose several arguments about art and community, and about history and identity. Cosponsored with the Jon Sims Center for the Performing Arts.
E.G. Crichton is a visual artist who creates both gallery installations and collaborative public works. She uses a range of media to explore hidden histories, collective social concerns, andcontroversies about desire. Her subject matter grows out of a conversation between site and historical research, stories from her life, and stories from people she interviews. The resulting narratives form a layered exploration of both memory and record: an uneasy alliance between private and public voices that addresses a space where repression encounters desire. She is a professor of art at the University of California, Santa Cruz.
Kim Anno was born in Los Angeles and currently lives in Berkeley. She is a painter, objectmaker, and public artist. Her painting is based in abstraction and is mediated by the body and Islamic and Buddhist architecture. Her public art addresses social concerns and presents it to the mainstream. Currently, she is an Associate Professor of Art at California College of Arts and Crafts.
