Artistic Director and Choreographer Joe Goode based “Gender Heroes Part I” on interviews conducted with Bay Area community members from different cultural and ethnic backgrounds, ranging from elderly persons and first-generation Americans to transgendered individuals and cross-dressers. This world premiere explores the social and cultural forces that influence gender, and the expectations of men and women in our communities. Through dance and spoken word, the piece uses the collected narratives to offer a glimpse into the personal journey toward one’s gender identity.
With his landmark solo piece, “29 Effeminate Gestures”, Goode deconstructs and reinterprets the subtleties of gesture, provoking laughter and reflection on issues of gender and sexuality. “Doris in a Dustbowl”, originally performed in 1989, centers on legendary costars Doris Day and Rock Hudson, with Joe Goode reprising his role as Rock..
The award-winning Joe Goode Performance Group was formed in 1986 and has toured extensively throughout the United States, Europe, Canada, South America, the Middle East and Africa.
