Presenting your Self: Send me your headshot, short bio, and artist’s statement
At every stage of an artist’s career, the first request from a curator, producer, or event coordinator is: “Please send me a headshot, bio, and artist’s statement.”
Artists who attend this workshop will leave with a fine tuned narrative biography, an artist’s statement, and an opportunity to meet other queer artists who are developing their artistic practice.
The workshop facilitator will begin with examples of well-written biographies and artist’s statements. Attendees will then be asked to write a short paragraph about themselves and their work that they will share with the group for positive feedback. The attendees will then be asked to present a short “elevator speech about who they are and what their art is about.”
The workshop leader, Janet Silk, is an artist and writer who teaches the Fine Arts Writing Workshop in the Department of Art and Art History at San Jose State University. She has written several essays about her own work and teaching experience, as well as about diverse topics such as Black Metal music, Czech poetry, and the Academy of Art University Spring Fashion Show 2014.
The workshop is free and open to all queer and non-queer artists.

Presenting your Work: Show Me Your Portfolio
This workshop is primarily for visual artists who want to learn how to present their work to curators and galleries. Artists will gain first hand knowledge of how curators view and think about work that is submitted for a specific exhibition vs. work that is submitted for general review.

This is your opportunity to have your work seen by SOMArts’ new Curator for Inquiry and Impact Melorra Green and her twin sister Melonie Green, independent curator and co-owner of Gallery 130l7, in the Fillmore district. Melorra and Melone have been curating creative art experiences and traditional exhibitions for over seven years.
From websites that are sent in for review, Melorra and Melonie will project work samples and discuss various best practices for presenting to curators and gallerists.
We are creating a supportive and nurturing environment for artists to learn and strengthen their artistic practice. Sending in a link to your website is not required to attend the workshop but highly recommended.
The workshop is free and open to all queer and non-queer artists.
