Jewelle Gomez poet, fiction writer and activist, is the author of three collections of poetry and one of essays. She will read “Charm” a monologue from her new book of short stories: DON’T EXPLAIN. Her novel, THE GILDA STORIES was the winner of two Lambda Literary Awards—for fiction and science fiction. Her new collection of short stories, DON’T EXPLAIN, is from Firebrand Books. She is the Executive Director of The Poetry Center and American Poetry Archives at San Francisco State University. Her work has appeared in ESSENCE Magazine, MS Magazine, BLACK SCHOLAR, The Advocate, The New York Times, The Philadelphia Inquirer, The Village Voice. and the San Francisco Chronicle. She’s the recipient of two California Council on the Arts Artist in Residence awards and received a fellowship in poetry from the National Endowment for the Arts in 1997.
