Jewelle Gomez reads poetry, monologues and more from past works and works in progress.

JEWELLE GOMEZ is a writer and activist. Formerly the executive director of the Poetry Center and American Poetry Archives at SFSU, she is on the national advisory boards of the NCLR, Poets & Writers magazine, and the Bayard Rustin Film Project. She’s the author of the double Lambda Award-winning novel, The Gilda Stories, which she adapted for the stage. The full production was performed by the Urban Bush Women Company and toured 13 U.S. cities in the 1996 season.

Jewelle is also the author of a collection of personal essays, Forty Three Septembers, and three collections of poetry. Her newest book, Don’t Explain, is a collection of short stories. Her essays, fiction, criticism, and poetry have appeared in numerous periodicals, including the San Francisco Chronicle, the New York Times, Gay Community News, The Village Voice, Ms, Essence, Curve, and the Advocate. She is currently working on a book about the 1960s and a play about James Baldwin.
