In Desire and Creation, Saun-Toy Latifa Trotter explores the concept of motherhood “within the context of race, homophobia, militarism, and patriarchy.” She says, “I am deeply curious about the untold stories of mothers and mothers-to-be. This performance will uncover the political and ethical dilemmas of choosing to bring life into a society that does not always love me or any child that I would birth as a queer-colored-single-woman. I believe in magic, miracles, love, universal spirit… and are those beliefs enough?” Trotter will leave audiences questioning their own assumptions about queer parenting and about the magic of motherhood in general. Written and performed by Saun-Toy Latifa Trotter, one of JSC’s The Best of AIRspace Artists in Residence.
