PEARL DIVING is a vibrant new evening featuring the work of core artists Arisika Razak & Alena Cawthorne (dancers/choreographers), with Pamela Peniston, creating a stunning visual landscape and an intriguing new composition for voice by Renee Arakaki. Sensually stripping away layers, Pearl Diving leads us through a nautilus of movement and voices. Hands whisper deep secrets, hips caress space, and women’s bodies make tender and intimate connection, revealing the pearl that is the deepest place in your own spirit. “Radiant!…each of its carefully measured steps seemed filled with a quiet joy.” The New York Times.
Pearl Diving features all live music in a first time collaboration with: the 17 member VOICES: Lesbian Choral Ensemble, native Hawaiian musician Zelie Kuliaikanuu Duvauchelle, and Jamaican born percussionist, Afia Walking Tree, who fuses traditional African rhythms with contemporary music forms.
Founded by Artistic Director Jill Togawa in 1992, Purple Moon’s work is known for its inclusion of both non western and western traditions, sensuality and powerful use of the eloquence of gesture, space and silence.
