Artist Statement
The word text is rooted in the latin verb texere which means ‘to weave’. As a writer and artist, I explore forms of intertextuality, intimacy, emotion and endurance. I am interested to find how written, spoken and woven texts are animate in their ability shape each other, creating new meanings that exceed any singular text alone. Through poetry, performance and handwoven processes, I examine ways in which bodies are written, structured by subjective experiences of site, labor and affective experience arising from intimacy.
My orientation to intimacy allows me to experience my works as texts co-scripted between myself and narratives embedded in the tools and materials at hand. The metaphors that cloth and cloth making offer up are limitless. It is for this reason I find weaving a resource for thinking though issues related to the future of black craft, forms of queer gesture and the possibility of new literary forms shaped by woven structures. Through the labor of my hand, mouth and language, I seek to generate scholarship that is witnessed on camera and can exist in the form of objects themselves.
