Stories of repression in underground Havana in the 60s; coming out trans in Catholic Puerto Rico in the 80s; Scarface, female impersonators, the “boat people;” San Francisco during the 80s and more! A night of reading & performance from Cuéntamelo!: a collection of oral histories/illustrations from elder LGBT Spanish-speaking immigrants. These narratives contribute to the intergenerational dialogue of queer Latin@ immigrants around body normativity, exile, displacement as well as exposing histories of oppression in our countries that have pushed us to seek a new home. They explore home(lessness) as experienced in the immigrant body, and how the fusion of queer slang (Spanglish) surfaces as a way of empowerment. There will be a panel where narrators will read/share their stories plus a fabulous performance from La Reina de Aztlán and a conversation with UC Berkeley professor Juana María Rodríguez. Cuentamelo! is produced by generous grants from Qcc & Galeria de la Raza through programs funded by the SF Arts Commission.
BIOGRAPHIES
Juliana Delgado
Colombian writer/oral historian based in San Francisco. Her stories have appeared in Forum, Revista Canto, La Revista, performed at Action Fiction! and as a cover story for SFWeekly. She is a former fiction editor for Fourteen Hills and runs a Queer Spanglish zine, Plastic Panties, with her partner. Juliana holds a B.A in Gender and Women’s Studies from UC Berkeley and is currently an MFA Candidate in Fiction at SFSU.
Laura Cerón is a Colombian graphic designer/illustrator based in San Francisco. She has worked for various publishing/printing houses some of which include: McSweeney’s, Torre Blanca and La Silueta Ediciones. A member of the art collective Tyrannus Melacholicus that publishes print media in Colombia. She is the art director for Quiet Lightning and holds a degree in Design from Universidad de los Andes, a certificate in Print Media from Cymetria and one in Marketing from UC Berkeley. Her book De Suna en Suna, an interactive journal about passing of time in Bogotá, was published in 2011 and received special mention at Volarán.
