Genderbending Gods
From Genderbending Gods to Underwear Parties in Delhi: The Many Faces of South Asian Gay Life Panel Discussion
Saturday, June 15; 1-3 pm
Location: Jon Sims Center for the Arts, 1519 Mission @ 11th St
Coinciding with the presentation of On A Muggy Night in Mumbai, by Mahesh Dattani, the first play in Indian theater to handle openly gay themes of love, partnership, trust and betrayal, NQAF is pleased to present a panel discussion addressing many of the issues raised by this play. Moderated by Sandip Roy, the panel will speak to the implications and nature of the representation of same-sex desire in contemporary Indian culture for both South Asian and American audiences. A pinker shade of brown is emerging from a rich history of pre and post Colonialist attitudes towards homosex. This play and panel provide an opportunity to glimpse the changing attitudes towards homosexuality in South Asia.
Moderator Sandip Roy is the editor of Trikone Magazine, the world’s oldest magazine on
South Asian LGBT issues, a writer and journalist for Pacific News Service, and host
of the radio program Up Front.
