my gaze // yr gaze presents “Speculative Genealogies and Precarious Futures,” an evening screening of short films by Desirée Holman Việt Lê, and Rudy Lemcke. Fantastical and absurd, Holman’s Troglodyte (2005) investigates ideas of violence, sex, animism, and nurturance by animating a primal horde chimp-like creatures. Lemcke’s (Orpheus) The Poetics of Finitude (2014) poetically reimagines the Orpheus myth by juxtaposing his fantastical fairy world alongside Jean Cocteau’s queer classic Orphée. Việt Lê’s Eclipse (Ruby) (2015) takes viewers on a multisensory poetic journey of trans diasporic movement and meaning accompanied by music from controversial, legendary musician Dai Lam Linh. The screening will be followed by a discussion with the filmmakers and guest curator Tina Takemoto.
Fimmaker Bios
Desirée Holman is an artist based in Oakland, California. Her work engages performance, video, photography and drawing to explore themes of social transgression, alternative realities, and identity play. Solo exhibitions sites of her work include the Hammer Museum in Los Angeles, and the Berkeley Art Museum’s MATRIX program. www.desireeholman.com
Việt Lê is an artist, writer, and curator. Recent solo exhibitions include lovebang! (Kellogg University Art Gallery, Los Angeles 2016), vestige (H Gallery Bangkok 2015), tan nÁRT cõi lòng | heARTbreak! (Nhà Sàn Collective Hà Nội). Lê has presented his work at The Banff Centre, Alberta, Canada; UCLA Hammer Museum, Los Angeles, USA; 1a Space, Hong Kong; Civitella Ranieri, Italy; Shanghai Biennale, China; Rio Gay Film Festival, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil; among other venues. Rudy Lemcke is a new media artist who lives and works in San Francisco. His artwork has been exhibited internationally in galleries and museums such as the Whitney Museum of American Art, the DeYoung Museum, and the Berkeley’s BAM/PFA. His video recent video work, (Orpheus) The Poetics of Finitude, has been screened recently in Frameline, the Florence Queer Festival and the Melbourne Queer Film Festival. www.rudylemcke.com
Guest Curator
Tina Takemoto is a scholar and artist whose current work explores queer perspectives on the incarceration of Japanese Americans during World War II and Asian Pacific Islander queer activist history. Her films have screened nationally and internationally at festivals including Frameline, Outfest, Ann Arbor Film Festival, MIX NYC, CAAMfest, Fusion, MIX Milano, MIX Mexico, Hamburg Queer Film Festival, and Rio Gay Film Festival.
