Shigeyuki Kihara

Samoan-Japanese fa’afafine/transgender performer and conceptual artist Shigeyuki Kihara from New Zealand, joins California-based Samoan painter, poet and filmmaker Dan Taulapapa McMullin for an opening night performance and reception for their new collection of conceptual photographs and paintings on the lives of fa’afafine today.

An extra incentive: performances by Yuki & Dan in the gallery to open the exhibit.

Dan Taulapapa McMullin

Dan Taulapapa McMullin’s early poetry The Bat won a 1997 Poets&Writers Award, and his film Sinalela won 2001 Best Short at the Honolulu Gay&Lesbian Film Festival. His paintings of Polynesian fa’afafine/transgender life were exhibited in his first solo show in 2005 at Chase Gallery.

Shigeyuki Kihara

Exhibiting recently in London, Paris, Beijing, Tokyo, Singapore, New York and throughout the South Pacific, Kihara’s work has been described by the Sydney Morning Herald as a “tour de force,” which “hauntingly provides a vivid measure of this artist’s aesthetic and technical commitment.”
