Torreya Cummings
Torreya Cummings
This work was made while at work—Cummings diverted waste material from museum exhibit graphics production into sculptural objects and other-than-intended installation material. These “thefts” of time and labor rescued, at least temporarily, materials that were unfit for their original task, but have their own compelling visual qualities.
Biography
Torreya Cummings has shown work locally and internationally, in such venues as Southern Exposure and Silverman Gallery, (SF), Monty ABN in Antwerp, Belgium, and Galleria 1/9 Unosunove, Rome, Italy, along with other, more ad hoc guerilla exhibitions in San Francisco. They have a forthcoming installation commissioned by the Oakland Museum of California in 2016/2017and were a nominee for the SF MOMA’s 2010 and 2012 SECA award. Cummings hails from California’s rural Central Valley, and that experience of queer urban/rural irreconcilable difference feeds into the work. Cummings holds an MFA in 2009 from the California College of the Arts, a BA in ceramics and photography from UC Davis.
