Sex clubs, bars, organizations and publications of the past several decades have relied heavily on advertisements and decoration for promotional purposes and to indicate the specific erotic interests they are connected with. All have depended on artists to communicate the concepts and information which nurture their existence and growth. Even though society has always depended on artwork to signify ideas, the artists who have produced it have frequently been ignored, if not abused. This exhibit spotlights the central role art has had in creating kinky identities, promoting organizations, and making perverse fantasies real.
More than sixty artists are included in this show of historical and contemporary works drawn from the GLHS Archives, private collectors, and participating artists. Featured media include photographs, paintings, drawings, prints, sculpture, rubbings, paper cuts, leather craft and mixed media, as well as numerous samples of graphic art from printed materials.
